Spiral Welded Steel Pipes- Applications, Advantages and Disadvantages and Specifications

AG Universal Limited manufactures and supplies spiral welded steel pipes for different applications such as water engineering, chemical industry, electric power industry, agriculture irrigation, urban construction (bridges development), natural gas extraction, drainage, steam heating, and manufacturing of steel structures. Spiral welded steel pipes are also used for transporting liquid/gas and steel casting.

Spiral welded steel pipes are made with the steel stripes or steel plates by bending deformation shapes before welding. After this, welding is done to join the steel pipes. There are different ways to do welding in pipes such as gas welding, electric arc welding, electric resistance welding, etc.

Spiral welded steel pipes adopt the advanced double-sided submerged arc welding manufacturing process to ensure the quality of products without any errors or defects. During the manufacturing process of a spiral welded steel pipe, the following things are taken for:

  • The steel plate should be uniformly deformed.
  • The residual stress should be small.
  • The surface should not be scratched..

A spiral welded steel pipe offers many advantages:

  • Steel pipes of the same width can be used to produce steel pipes of different diameters.
  • They are easy to realise mechanisation and automation.
  • They are flexible to change the variety and operation.
  • They can be continuously produced to make long pipes.
  • There sizes are accurate.

Spiral welded steel pipes also have certain disadvantages. Due to the use of coiled steel rod as a raw material, there is a certain crescent end bend. The welding point also lies in the elastic strip edge area. Therefore, it is difficult to align the welding torch and improve the welding quality.

Standard specifications for a spiral welded steel pipe

  • IS- 1239
  • IS- 3589 steel tubes for water and sewage
  • BS-1387 steel tubes for water, gas, air and steam
  • En-10217 welded steel tubes for pressure purposes
  • DIN- 2458 welded steel pipes and tubes
  • ASTM A-53 steel pipes hoot dipped, zinc coated, seamless and welded
